Poor Charlie’s Almanack is a book comprising a series of talks by the billionaire Charlie Munger, former Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. While much of the book focuses on his approach to investing, there are some good takeaways for parenting

Adam is a Product and Growth advisor with a 20-year career as an operator for companies like Lyft, Patreon, and Imperfect Foods. He also teaches courses through Reforge and has a newsletter on product, growth and parenting while working at FishmanAFNewsletter.com. This year he started a podcast called Startup Dad (startupdadpod.com), where he interviews Dads who are also company leaders and talks to them about fatherhood. He lives outside of San Francisco with his partner Arielle, two kids ages 8 and 11, dog, and guinea pigs.

I’ve just finished reading the Almanac of Naval Ravikant. For those of you not in tech, Naval is a successful tech founder and investor, famous for founding Angel List and investing early in Uber, Twitter, and Notion. He credits his success with reading for 1-2 hours every day and thinks fairly deeply about what is worth doing in life

The Full Vertical Ownership Theory of household management is a system that my partner and I use to streamline running the house. It’s one of the core systems we have in place in our home to simplify and reduce complexity. The idea behind this theory is that it is significantly more efficient if one person in the household wholly owns a vertical end-to-end.

A friend recently recommended the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend to me. I’m only a couple of episodes in, but it’s just what I need this week — funny, insightful, and easy to listen to. It also happens to contain some great parenting wisdom.

The second episode is with Kristen Bell, and she shares two pieces of parenting advice that stuck with me.

Business Dad is an excellent podcast by Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit and founder at Initialized Capital and Seven Seven Six. Perhaps most importantly, he is also Serena Williams's husband and Olympia's dad. His conversation with Nicholas Thompson, CEO at The Atlantic and previously Editor in Chief for Wired, is full of parenting gems. While it’s well worth a listen, I’ve summarised my favourite learnings from Nicholas here.

Time matters more than anything as a parent, and accidentally spending valuable time with no return is a waste. Presence also matters to us and our children; they notice when we’re with them but are actually engrossed in our phones.

There are two interlocking systems for becoming indistractible as a parent. First is to set up your phone to focus on the use cases you want. The second is to block or limit the time sinks that you don’t.

The goal of taking photographs and videos is to build a digital memory, essentially outsourcing a part of our brain so that we can more easily, accurately and tangibly pull up that memory later. A digital memory is useful if we can easily retrieve memories and they are enjoyable to browse. Given that our memories of our family are likely the most important in life, we must make our family digital memory a good one.

Lona is a Venture-Backed, Y combinator founder, Head of Revenue @SafetyWing and an advisor to startups and EU for Innovation. She is a remote work thought leader and an expert at building revenue channels & fully remote teams from zero to one. Lona is a location-independent digital nomad who has worked and travelled to 80+ countries. She is also building the first country on the internet @Plumia! Lona is based in Miami but lives a nomadic lifestyle with her partner George and her two kids, aged 5 and 3.

As a parent, there are multiple moments every day that I want to bottle up and keep forever. To stop time, I pull out my phone and take photos or videos that won’t do the memory justice. I’m frequently torn between being part of a scene and documenting it to revisit later.

Our digital memories are potent. They allow us to time travel back to precious moments and to share them with family and friends far away. But it’s very easy to find that we constantly have phones between ourselves and our children as we try to document it all.

As always, simple systems can help out.

Becoming a parent has made me think a lot about longevity. I feel a responsibility to my son to be around as long as possible. I want to be the person, when all else fails, he knows he can come back to and will be here for him. I also don’t want to burden him later in life. If he has young children, I hope he can focus on the joy of his young family and not have the stress of an ageing parent with health needs.

Devika Bhushan, MD, is a pediatrician, public health leader, and writer on a mission to drive health innovation, equity, and resilience. Previously, as California’s Acting Surgeon General, Dr. Bhushan was a key public health spokesperson and advisor to the California Governor. Good Inside has two clear benefits for working parents. First, the type of parenting that is most energy-draining (to me, at least) is dealing with meltdowns. Clear tactical strategies for handling and reducing challenging behaviour are a major win. Second, many ideas in the book about psychological safety, connection and growth mindset apply equally to managing teams. It’s an excellent example of how building parenting skills supercharges skills in the workplace.
